US Vice President JD Vance has voiced strong support for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán during a joint press conference in Budapest, days before Hungary’s parliamentary election.

Speaking alongside Orbán, Vance criticised alleged external influence on Hungary’s election, accusing EU institutions of undermining the country’s economy and energy independence.

Vance’s visit comes ahead of the 12 April vote, widely seen as the most competitive contest of Orbán’s political career. The long-serving prime minister faces a strong challenge from opposition leader Péter Magyar, whose centre-right Tisza party has led in several recent opinion polls.

Hungarian officials have described the visit as a sign of strengthened bilateral ties, with cooperation focused on energy security, including liquefied natural gas imports and nuclear technology, amid ongoing disruptions to regional oil and gas supplies.

Vance also addressed tensions with Iran, reinforcing the ultimatum facing Tehran, as the United States pushes for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a response by Tuesday (7 April) @ 8:00 PM Eastern Time.

Shortly before the press conference, President Donald Trump underscored the urgency of the deadline with a post on Truth Social, stating: “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will. However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS? We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!”that “a whole civilization will die tonight”,
