Vietnam’s Communist Party leader To Lam has been elected president, further consolidating power in one of Asia’s fastest-growing economies.

Elected by the National Assembly to a five-year term, Lam becomes the first modern Vietnamese leader to simultaneously hold the roles of party chief and state president, centralising authority across party and state institutions.

Lam said his priorities include sustaining economic growth, ensuring political stability, and improving living standards. His leadership model mirrors China’s structure under Xi Jinping, signalling a shift towards more decisive policymaking.

• Vietnam recorded 7.8% GDP growth in Q1 2026, below its 10% annual target

• Ongoing government restructuring has reduced ministries and jobs

• Energy pressures linked to the Iran conflict have disrupted oil imports

• The US remains Vietnam’s largest export market, accounting for nearly one-third

Analysts, including Nguyen Khac Giang, note a shift towards a more “asymmetrical” leadership system, potentially accelerating reforms but requiring broader political consensus.
