President of Ecuador Daniel Noboa has highlighted his country’s ongoing efforts to tackle narco-terrorism while maintaining economic stability and public safety.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Noboa emphasised the challenge of balancing security operations with citizens’ everyday needs, particularly for young people seeking employment and hope. When asked whether he would welcome US troops on the ground, Noboa responded, “If they’re willing to follow the lead of Ecuadorian armed forces, then no problem,” signalling openness to temporary, collaborative support while maintaining national command over operations.

Ecuadorian forces, supported by US Southern Command, have launched joint operations targeting narco-terrorists along border regions. Intelligence and technology from the United States have assisted Ecuador’s armed forces in planning and executing these missions, which remain under Ecuadorian command.

Noboa also participated in the ‘Shield of the Americas’ summit, convened by US President Donald Trump with 12 Latin American leaders, promoting regional cooperation against organised crime and cartel networks.

Although Ecuadorians rejected foreign military bases in a national referendum last year, Noboa emphasised that international agreements allow temporary collaboration under Ecuadorian control, noting that “at the same time, 70% of the country is happy that we have a good relationship with the US. So sometimes numbers or a referendum can be irrational in a way.”

Noboa suggested could be implemented this year to sustain security gains, including a reported 38% reduction in border homicides.
