US President Trump said Tuesday (7 April) he has agreed to a two week “double sided CEASEFIRE” with Iran, “subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz”.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said the decision followed discussions with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, who “requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran.” He emphasised that the pause comes “because we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East.”

Trump noted that the United States had “received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate,” adding that “almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran.”

In response Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said it had accepted a two-week ceasefire in the war.

Its statement said it would negotiate with the United States in Islamabad beginning Friday.

“It is emphasized that this does not signify the termination of the war,” the statement said. “Our hands remain upon the trigger, and should the slightest error be committed by the enemy, it shall be met with full force.”
