Coordinated attacks by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) launched coordinated overnight attacks on multiple locations in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno state, killing an army ‌general and several other soldiers, military sources said on Thursday (9 April).

Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters confirmed an assault on a military base in Benisheikh, stating troops repelled the attack but suffered casualties. Spokesperson Major-General Michael Onoja said forces, led by Brigadier-General Oseni Braimah, responded with “exceptional courage” and forced insurgents to retreat.

However, unverified military sources indicated the base may have been temporarily overrun, with reports of Brigadier-General Braimah’s death and additional losses. Clearance operations remain ongoing.

• Attacks also struck Pulka and Bakin Ruwa in Gwoza district late Wednesday

• Air support was deployed, with evacuations conducted after prolonged fighting

• Casualty figures remain unconfirmed pending official notification

The insurgency, ongoing since 2009, continues to drive instability, displacement, and sustained military engagement across northeastern Nigeria.
