North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said ties with Beijing have reached “new heights” following talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Pyongyang, signalling renewed momentum in bilateral relations.

During Wang’s first visit since 2019, both sides pledged to strengthen strategic coordination, expand cooperation, and reinforce long-standing political ties. Wang conveyed greetings from President Xi Jinping, describing recent engagements as opening a “new chapter” in relations.

The visit comes amid regional tensions and follows North Korea’s recent weapons tests, while Beijing seeks to maintain stability on the Korean peninsula.

Key developments:

• Kim Jong-un reaffirmed closer ties with China as a “firm policy priority”.

• Wang Yi emphasised cooperation on regional and global issues among developing nations.

• Cross-border travel links between Beijing and Pyongyang have recently resumed.

• No reference was made to denuclearisation during official discussions.

Both sides also highlighted upcoming commemorations marking the 65th anniversary of their 1961 treaty.
