Colombia’s Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism has confirmed it will raise tariffs on imports from Ecuador to 100%, up from 30%.

The sum, confirmed on Friday (10 April), will match the rate Ecuador set a day earlier, amid an escalating trade and diplomatic spat between the two South American nations.

Ecuador had previously raised tariffs on Colombia, citing a trade deficit and alleging insufficient action on drug trafficking. Colombia has rejected the claims, highlighting recent military operations, including its largest drug seizure in a decade.

Tensions have also escalated between Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa and Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro, following disputes over remarks regarding former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas and alleged cross-border military activity.

Colombian Trade Minister Diana Morales said Colombia had exhausted diplomatic channels before implementing countermeasures, which take effect immediately.
