Haiti is facing a rapidly worsening humanitarian crisis, with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warning of severe instability driven by escalating gang violence and mass displacement.

Edem Wosornu, Director of OCHA’s Crisis Response Division, said conditions have deteriorated significantly following her March 2026 visit, with large areas under armed group control.

More than half the population—around 6.4 million people—now require humanitarian assistance, amid widespread hunger, insecurity, and limited access to basic services.

• Around 5.7 million people face food insecurity across Haiti

• Approximately 1.5 million people are internally displaced

• Over 1,600 schools remain closed, affecting 250,000 children

• Reported gender-based violence cases rose 25% year-on-year

Humanitarian operations remain underfunded, with less than 20% of the $880 million appeal met.

Meanwhile, electoral preparations have been delayed. Jacques Desrosiers, President of Haiti’s CEP electoral council, cited legal and security challenges, raising uncertainty over the country’s first presidential election since 2016.
