China has signalled a limited easing of cross-strait restrictions following talks between Cheng Li-wun, senior figure in Taiwan’s Kuomintang (KMT), and President Xi Jinping.

Beijing said it is open to resuming selected exchanges with Taiwan, including direct flights, tourism, media access, and food trade, after years of curtailed engagement with Taipei’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)-led government under President Lai Ching-te.

Key developments:

• China announced 10 incentive measures, including limited tourism from Shanghai and Fujian.

• Plans to restore direct flights to cities such as Xi’an and Urumqi.

• Conditional approval for Taiwanese media content deemed “appropriate”.

• Potential easing of import restrictions on Taiwanese agricultural and fishery products.

Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council criticised the measures as politically conditional, while the KMT welcomed them. Implementation remains uncertain without approval from Taipei.
