Speaking at a press conference on Monday (13 April) following a meeting of the EU’s top executive body, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned that the recent US–Israel conflict with Iran, now under a ceasefire, is having direct economic consequences for the EU, stating that “peace cannot be taken for granted” as instability persists.
Ursula highlighted disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, noting the “restoration of the freedom of navigation is of paramount importance” amid rising energy costs and supply uncertainty.
Emphasising global interdependence, von der Leyen added that the crisis is “not some distant issue”, with immediate impacts on fuel prices and household bills across Europe.
Key developments:
• Ceasefire efforts acknowledged, with Pakistan credited for its diplomatic role, though negotiations remain stalled
• EU calls for cessation of hostilities in Lebanon and respect for sovereignty
• Plans for coordinated gas storage, oil stock releases, and targeted support for households
• Acceleration of renewables, nuclear energy, and electrification strategy to reduce fossil fuel dependency
The Commission is expected to present further measures ahead of the upcoming European Council, focusing on energy security, market stability, and long-term decarbonisation.
