Tens of thousands demonstrated on Sunday (Sep. 21) at Heroes’ Square in Budapest, criticising Prime Minister Viktor Orban for using taxpayer money on information campaigns. Critics argue these campaigns often target political opponents and reinforce nationalist messaging, including opposition to Ukraine’s EU accession.
The government maintains these initiatives are factual and designed to raise public awareness. The rally drew approximately 50,000 people, according to organisers. Protesters highlighted concerns over the constant presence of political advertising online and in public spaces.
A prominent symbol at the event was a zebra balloon, referencing the perceived lavish lifestyle of the governing elite.
The administration plans a national consultation on taxation in October, which opposition parties describe as misleading and supportive of Orban’s policies. Previous consultations reportedly cost millions of euros. Organisers, including the Loupe Theatre Troupe, are advocating for a referendum to restrict state-funded ads likely to mislead or incite.
