Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ruled out the establishment of a Palestinian state, responding to the decisions by Britain, Canada and Australia to formally recognise Palestinian statehood.

Speaking on Sunday (Sep. 21), Netanyahu accused the countries of “rewarding terror” following the Hamas attack of 7 October 2023, and reiterated that no Palestinian state would exist “west of the Jordan River.” He also pledged to continue expanding Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

• UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said recognition aimed to “revive the hope of peace” through a two-state solution.

• Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney offered support for “a peaceful future” for both Israel and Palestine.

• Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the move as consistent with Canberra’s “longstanding commitment” to a two-state solution.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin welcomed the recognition as “irreversible,” while Portugal’s Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel reaffirmed that a two-state solution remains the “only path” to lasting peace.
