Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ruled out the establishment of a Palestinian state, responding to the decisions by Britain, Canada and Australia to formally recognise Palestinian statehood.

Speaking on Sunday (Sep. 21), Netanyahu accused the countries of ā€œrewarding terrorā€ following the Hamas attack of 7 October 2023, and reiterated that no Palestinian state would exist ā€œwest of the Jordan River.ā€ He also pledged to continue expanding Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

• UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said recognition aimed to ā€œrevive the hope of peaceā€ through a two-state solution.

• Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney offered support for ā€œa peaceful futureā€ for both Israel and Palestine.

• Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the move as consistent with Canberra’s ā€œlongstanding commitmentā€ to a two-state solution.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin welcomed the recognition as ā€œirreversible,ā€ while Portugal’s Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel reaffirmed that a two-state solution remains the ā€œonly pathā€ to lasting peace.
