Thousands of Italians joined nationwide demonstrations in solidarity with Palestinians, coordinated by trade unions across nearly 80 towns and cities. Major disruptions occurred in Milan, Rome, Genoa, Turin, and Bologna, where transport and universities were affected.

Clashes in Milan left 60 police officers injured, prompting condemnation from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who labelled the violence ā€œshamefulā€ and counterproductive.

Meloni has criticised Israel’s military campaign in Gaza but resisted following France, the UK, Canada and Australia in recognising a Palestinian state. President Emmanuel Macron described France’s decision as a ā€œnecessityā€ and part of a wider peace process.

Italy and Germany remain cautious, arguing recognition should come later. Israel’s leadership condemned France’s move, while EU figures including Ursula von der Leyen urged an end to violence in Gaza.
