Italy and France are preparing for further demonstrations this weekend as governments respond to renewed social unrest linked to cost-of-living pressures, public services and economic concerns.

In Italy, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government has approved new security measures following violent clashes in Milan and other cities. The package includes the deployment of 500 additional troops to Milan, tougher penalties for violent participation in demonstrations, and expanded legal powers to address protest-related offences.

In France, authorities are preparing for further demonstrations as the Yellow Vest movement and student groups plan new protests in Paris. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has held talks with trade unions in an effort to ease tensions, while President Emmanuel Macron has called for public order to be maintained.

The developments highlight wider European challenges surrounding affordability, social dissatisfaction and government responses to public demonstrations. Both countries face the challenge of balancing the right to peaceful protest with maintaining public security.
