President Donald Trump has signed an order classifying Antifa as a domestic terrorist organisation, following the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The move, announced at the White House, directs US agencies to investigate and dismantle Antifa-linked activities.
Antifa, short for anti-fascist, is a decentralised movement opposing “far-right” and fascist groups. Lacking central leadership, it encompasses anarchists, socialists, and activists with broadly anti-capitalist, pro-immigration, and pro-LGBTQ views. Critics point to incidents of violence at protests, while supporters argue actions are defensive.
Trump has long pledged to target the “radical left”, framing Antifa as central to that effort. Legal experts note uncertainty over how the designation will be enforced.
