US President Donald Trump used a wide-ranging interview with NBC News’ ‘Meet the Press’ moderator Kristen Welker to discuss Iran, the US economy, election administration and the proposed $1.8 billion anti-weaponisation fund.
The interview touched on the proposed anti-weaponisation fund, a plan intended to provide compensation to individuals who argue they were unfairly targeted by government actions.
Although Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has indicated the initiative is no longer moving forward following legal and political challenges, Trump said he still viewed it as “a great idea” and stated that, if it were up to him, affected individuals would receive “the kind of money that they deserve”.
The discussion later became increasingly contentious as Trump repeated claims that the 2020 election was “rigged” and alleged similar issues were occurring in California. Kristen Welker challenged those assertions, noting that evidence had not been presented in court.
The interview concluded abruptly after an extended exchange over election integrity and media credibility, with Trump criticising several major news organisations before ending the discussion and leaving the interview.
On Iran, Trump said negotiations were progressing and reiterated that preventing Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remained a key objective of his administration.
He said the United States was close to an agreement but maintained that military action remained an option if talks failed. Trump also linked higher energy costs to the ongoing crisis, arguing that fuel prices would fall once the situation was resolved.
