Norway’s Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, has described the current international environment as a period of accelerated change rather than systemic collapse, speaking at the Oslo Security Conference 2026.

He said the world is experiencing a strategic “rupture”, noting that history is defined by repeated transformations now unfolding at unprecedented speed. Støre argued that elements of the global order require reform, pointing to the UN Security Council’s post-Second World War structure and the absence of permanent representation for Africa and Latin America.

On security, Støre highlighted Norway’s ongoing cooperation with the United States within NATO, stressing the practical and strategic importance of the alliance. He said: “If we focus on pragmatism and geography, I think there is an enduring US dimension to our security which we have to analyse and understand.”

Addressing claims about NATO contributions, he added: “It rings completely false when the American president stands on the wall saying that we have given everything to NATO and NATO gives nothing in return. It is wrong. It’s plain wrong.” Støre emphasised that collective defence is built on shared self-interest rather than charity.
