Marco Rubio, US Secretary of State, told leaders at the Munich Security Conference 2026 that Washington seeks closer transatlantic cooperation while prioritising national sovereignty.

Rubio said the United States, under Donald Trump, aims for global “renewal and restoration”, adding, “While we are prepared… to do this alone, it is our preference… to do this together with you, our friends here in Europe.” He stressed, “For the United States and Europe, we belong together.”

He called for reform of global institutions, saying the United Nations still has “tremendous potential” but currently “has no answers” on major crises. Rubio added the West “can no longer place the so-called global order above the vital interests of our people”.

Addressing security, he reaffirmed support for NATO cooperation and warned mass migration risks “civilisational erasure” and Western destabilisation.
