Tens of thousands have fled renewed Afghanistan–Pakistan border clashes, according to the United Nations. The UN World Food Programme (WFP) said around 20,000 families — roughly 160,000 people — have been displaced, with emergency food aid suspended in several provinces already facing acute malnutrition.

Fighting escalated after Afghan forces launched a border offensive following earlier Pakistani air strikes. Islamabad has since conducted further strikes, including on the former US base at Bagram, as well as Kabul and Kandahar.

Key developments:

• At least 42 civilians killed and 104 wounded, the UN mission reported.

• Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said dialogue was possible but vowed to “finish this menace”.

• Casualty claims from both militaries remain unverified.

Both sides accuse each other of harbouring militants, deepening regional instability.
