Ukrainian and Russian officials have issued competing claims about the battlefield situation as the Russia–Ukraine war enters its fourth year, while planned US-brokered peace talks have been delayed amid the Middle East conflict.

Maj. Gen. Oleksandr Komarenko said Ukrainian forces recently retook most territory in the Dnipropetrovsk region, reclaiming over 400 sq km during a counteroffensive. Andrii Kyianenko, deputy battalion commander of the 425th Separate Assault Regiment “Skelia”, said Ukrainian troops advanced more than 10 km after breaking Russian defensive lines.

Key developments

• Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow’s forces are expanding control in the Donbas, claiming Ukraine now holds 15–17% of the region.

• Ukraine said it intercepted 122 of 137 Russian drones launched overnight.

• Kyiv said Storm Shadow missiles struck the Kremniy El microchip factory in Bryansk, reportedly linked to Russian missile systems.

The Institute for the Study of War said Ukrainian counterattacks could disrupt Russia’s planned spring–summer 2026 offensive campaign. Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged the United States not to ease sanctions on Moscow, warning it would strengthen Russia’s war financing.
