Nearly 700,000 people have been displaced in Lebanon, including around 200,000 children, as fighting linked to the US/Israel–Iran war expands across the region, according to UNICEF.
The conflict intensified following US and Israeli strikes on Iran, Iranian missile attacks on Israel, and Israeli operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), 294 people have been killed and more than 1,000 injured in Lebanon during the first eight days of fighting.
Key developments:
• 41 people were killed in an Israeli operation in Nabi Sheet on 7 March, Lebanese authorities said.
• Israeli evacuation orders now cover areas south of the Litani River and parts of Beirut’s southern suburbs.
• Iran reports at least 1,330 civilian deaths, while about 2,000 people have been injured in Israel.
• Shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, which carries around 20% of global oil, are impacting energy, fertiliser and food supply chains.
UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher warned the war could worsen humanitarian crises globally and divert attention from conflicts in Sudan, South Sudan and Ukraine.
