US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington is “going to have to re-examine” its relationship with NATO following the Iran conflict, citing concerns over access to allied bases and airspace.

Speaking to Sean Hannity on Fox News, Rubio said the alliance had historically enabled the US to project military power globally through European bases. However, he questioned its current value after some allies reportedly restricted US landing rights and overflight permissions during operations linked to Iran.

Rubio emphasised that the US was not requesting direct military involvement, but access to infrastructure. He warned that if such access is denied, the alliance risks becoming “one-way”, benefiting European defence more than US strategic needs.

He added that the decision ultimately rests with President Donald Trump, following the conclusion of the conflict.
