The United States and Indonesia have formalised a major defence cooperation partnership, aimed at strengthening security ties and enhancing regional stability across the Asia-Pacific.

US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Indonesian Minister of Defence Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin signed the agreement at the Pentagon, highlighting an expanding bilateral military relationship. Both sides emphasised cooperation in advanced defence technologies and operational readiness.

The partnership follows ongoing discussions over potential US military overflight access to Indonesian airspace. Jakarta has clarified that any proposal remains preliminary and non-binding, with full sovereignty retained.

Key developments:

• Joint focus on asymmetric capabilities and next-generation maritime and autonomous systems

• Over 170 annual military exercises between US and Indonesian forces

• Ongoing talks on US military airspace access, still under internal review

• Indonesia reiterates full control over national airspace and sovereignty

The agreement reflects broader geopolitical engagement as President Prabowo Subianto continues high-level diplomacy with global leaders.
