US-based mining firm KoBold Metals has launched what it describes as the world’s largest lithium exploration campaign in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), signalling a shift in mineral discovery through advanced technology and foreign investment.

The initiative spans over 3,000 square kilometres across 13 licences, centred on the Manono region, now recognised as a key lithium hub. The project integrates AI-driven targeting, hyperspectral aerial imaging, and on-site laboratory analysis to accelerate exploration timelines.

KoBold Metals CEO Kurt House said the expansion reflects growing US–DRC cooperation, while DRC Director Benjamin Katabuka highlighted collaboration between local expertise and international technology.

• Over $50 million committed by early 2027

• 30,000+ geochemical samples and extensive airborne surveys planned

• Exploration area expected to expand to 5,000 square kilometres

• More than $20 million already paid to the DRC treasury

The campaign underscores the DRC’s rising role in global lithium supply chains, driven by demand for energy transition technologies.
