Rumen Radev, leader of Progressive Bulgaria (PB), has won Bulgaria’s latest general election, securing a parliamentary majority after years of political instability.

With 87% of votes counted, PB is projected to hold at least 135 seats in the 240-seat National Assembly. The PP-DB coalition and GERB, led by former prime minister Boiko Borisov, trailed with 15% and 13% respectively.

Radev, a former president and air force commander, campaigned on anti-corruption and governance reform, following protests over a disputed 2025 budget.

  • PB expected to govern alone but may need support for judicial reforms requiring a two-thirds majority
  • Radev signals pragmatic EU stance, including dialogue on security and industrial competitiveness
  • Bulgaria remains a key indirect supplier of ammunition to Ukraine via third countries
