The UK will pay £500m to France under a new deal aimed at reducing Channel small boat crossings through expanded enforcement and surveillance in northern France.

UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez signed the three-year agreement in Dunkirk, focusing on disrupting smuggling networks and improving coastal monitoring.

  • £500m UK funding, with an additional £160m conditional on results
  • Police deployment rising from 907 to 1,392 officers (2026–2029)
  • Expanded surveillance using drones, helicopters and electronic systems targeting “taxi boats”

The UK Home Office said the extra funding depends on performance, with payments paused if targets are not met.
