French President Emmanuel Macron has acknowledged challenges within European Union regulation, suggesting some rules may be hindering competitiveness and innovation across key sectors.
Speaking alongside Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at a Kathimerini event in Athens, moderated by Executive Editor Alexis Papachelas, Macron said “we overregulated some sectors”, pointing to the need for greater scale, speed, and simplification.
He argued that EU frameworks can disadvantage domestic firms, stating: “Most of the time our regulation is a burden on the European players and we are too naive and too open on the non-European ones.”
Macron emphasised the importance of fair competition, noting that “protection is not protectionism”, while warning that China’s “over capacities and over subsidies” are putting pressure on European industry.
He also advocated a “European preference” to support strategic autonomy and ensure a level playing field in global trade.
