Peter Magyar has been sworn in as Hungary’s new prime minister following the 2026 parliamentary election, ending Viktor Orbán’s 16 years in office.

The centre-right Tisza Party secured 141 of 199 parliamentary seats, giving Magyar a strong mandate as his government seeks to improve Hungary’s relations with the European Union and address economic pressures.

A ceremony inside Hungary’s parliament marked the transition, with the EU flag displayed in the chamber for the first time in 12 years after parliamentary speaker Ágnes Forsthoffer ordered its reinstatement.

Key developments:

  • Tisza Party won 141 parliamentary seats
  • Hungary aims to unlock around $20bn in frozen EU funding
  • Budget deficit reached nearly three-quarters of its annual target by April
  • Magyar pledged reforms and closer diplomatic engagement with the EU
