Tens of thousands of demonstrators marched through Madrid on Saturday (23 May) calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez amid ongoing corruption controversies linked to figures connected to the governing Socialist Party.

The “March for Dignity”, organised by the Spanish Civil Society association, remained largely peaceful, although police detained several masked individuals near Moncloa Palace, the prime minister’s residence. Authorities confirmed three arrests.

Key developments:

  • Organisers estimated attendance at 80,000, while government officials placed the figure closer to 40,000.
  • Opposition figures from the People’s Party and Vox participated in the demonstration.
  • Former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero is under investigation over alleged influence-peddling and money-laundering claims, which he denies.

Investigations involving Begoña Gómez, Sánchez’s wife, remain politically contentious, with prosecutors seeking closure of the case.
