India increased crude oil imports from Latin America and Africa after disruption to Middle East supplies linked to the Israel-US conflict with Iran and restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, according to trade data and Kpler figures.

Indian refiners raised purchases from Venezuela, Brazil, Angola and Nigeria during April and May 2026 while continuing significant imports of Russian crude. Russia remained India’s largest oil supplier, followed by the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

India also resumed limited Iranian oil imports for the first time in seven years after Washington issued a temporary waiver aimed at stabilising global oil markets.

Key developments:

  • India imported 4.57 million barrels per day (bpd) of oil in April 2026.
  • Russian oil imports fell 29.4% from March to around 1.6 million bpd.
  • UAE crude imports rebounded to roughly 669,700 bpd in April.
  • OPEC’s share of India’s oil imports rose to 45.2% in April.
