Iran has warned it could respond forcefully to any renewed US military action or naval blockade as negotiations between Washington and Tehran continue over Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security.
Speaking in Tehran on Sunday (24 May), Mohsen Rezaei, senior adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader and former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), said Iran would resist any blockade in the Persian Gulf and could reconsider its membership of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) if tensions escalate further.
He also said the IRGC Navy remains responsible for security in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.
The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which entered into force in 1970, is an international agreement aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear weapons, promoting peaceful nuclear energy cooperation, and advancing nuclear disarmament. Iran is a signatory to the treaty and maintains that its nuclear programme is intended for civilian purposes.
US President Donald Trump said negotiations with Iran were progressing “in an orderly and constructive manner” while maintaining that Tehran must not develop nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters in New Delhi that the US would give diplomacy every chance to succeed before exploring “alternatives”, after President Donald Trump said on Sunday he had told his representatives not to rush into any Iran deal.
The United States will either have a good agreement with Iran or deal with the country “another way”, he added.
