Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme following the publication of his latest essay, former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair warned that “a serious country can’t” continue changing prime ministers without a long-term policy direction.
Blair argued that Britain is unprepared for what he described as two “epochal changes” reshaping the world: geopolitical realignment and the rapid rise of artificial intelligence. He said governments must place “policy first, politics second”, warning that leadership contests alone will not solve the country’s wider challenges.
In his essay, Blair said Labour was “playing with fire” over both its political future and the future of Britain, arguing the party lacks a “worked-out, coherent plan” for a fast-changing world economy and security environment.
He described artificial intelligence as “the thing” that will “change absolutely everything”, calling for reforms focused on economic growth, technology adoption, defence, infrastructure and government modernisation.
