Canada is aiming to increase exports to China by 50 per cent by 2030, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, as she welcomed Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Ottawa for high-level talks.

“We are committed to growing this relationship responsibly with a goal of increasing exports to China by 50 per cent by 2030 while safeguarding Canada’s economic and national security interests and values over decades,” Ms. Anand said as reporters covered the start of her meeting with Mr. Wang.

The visit comes as both countries continue efforts to strengthen a strategic partnership agreed earlier in 2026.

Recent tensions remain in focus after Canadian warship HMCS Charlottetown transited the Taiwan Strait in May. Beijing criticised the move, stating it opposed actions it said undermined Chinese sovereignty under freedom of navigation operations.

Key developments:

  • Canada aims to raise exports to China by 50 per cent by 2030.
  • China and Canada continue rebuilding relations after years of trade disputes.
  • Ottawa agreed to lower tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles under a new trade arrangement.
  • Beijing reduced retaliatory tariffs on Canadian products including canola and seafood.
