Colombia’s Foreign Ministry has accused Ecuador of “deliberate interference” in the country’s presidential election after Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa announced the removal of bilateral tariffs following discussions with Colombian presidential candidate Abelardo De La Espriella.

The tariffs are due to be lifted on 1 June. Noboa said the decision followed an agreement on closer cooperation against organised crime and narcotics trafficking, as well as the transfer of Ecuadorian criminals located in Colombia.

Key developments:

  • Colombia rejected the presentation of the tariff removal as a goodwill gesture linked to a presidential candidate.
  • The Colombian government said it would withdraw measures introduced in response to Ecuador’s tariffs.
  • The two countries have been engaged in a trade dispute linked to border security and drug trafficking concerns.
  • Colombians are voting in a presidential election on Sunday, with De La Espriella among the candidates.

The dispute highlights ongoing diplomatic and trade tensions between the neighbouring countries ahead of a closely watched election.
