Danish Prime Minister-designate Mette Frederiksen is set to return to office after reaching an agreement to form a new centre-left coalition government following more than two months of negotiations.

The proposed four-party coalition is expected to include Frederiksen’s Social Democrats, the Moderates, Green Left, and the Social Liberals.

Key developments:

  • Coalition negotiations lasted more than two months, the longest government formation process in Danish history.
  • The new administration is expected to replace the outgoing coalition of the Social Democrats, Moderates and Venstre.
  • A government programme is due to be presented on 3 June, with ministerial appointments expected on 4 June.
  • The coalition follows Denmark’s March 2026 parliamentary election, in which the Social Democrats recorded their weakest result in over a century.
