Five Eyes security agencies have issued a joint warning alleging that Chinese intelligence services are using professional networking platforms and online job websites to recruit individuals with access to sensitive government, military and economic information.
The bulletin, “Safeguarding Our Secrets”, was released by intelligence and security agencies from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
It states that Chinese military intelligence services are using an “increasingly wide array” of online platforms to target personnel with access to classified or privileged information.
Key developments:
- Security clearance holders, military personnel, journalists, academics and think tank employees were identified as potential targets.
- The bulletin alleges recruiters pose as consultants, researchers or HR professionals representing legitimate-looking organisations.
- Recruits may be paid from hundreds to thousands of dollars for reports, with higher payments offered for increasingly sensitive information.
According to the warning, Chinese intelligence services seek to acquire “privileged military, political and economic intelligence” that could provide a “strategic and tactical advantage” over the Five Eyes alliance.
Chinese officials rejected the allegations, with a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in London describing claims of a Chinese espionage threat as “entirely fabricated” and “malicious slander”.
