India and Slovakia have agreed to elevate their relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Robert Fico in Bratislava on Monday (15 June).

The visit marked the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Slovakia since the country’s independence in 1993. Both leaders outlined plans to deepen cooperation across defence, trade, technology, energy, education and security.

Key developments include:

  • Signing agreements on defence cooperation, digital technologies, labour migration, education and audiovisual production.
  • Expanded collaboration on artificial intelligence, semiconductors, cybersecurity, post-quantum cryptography and emerging technologies.
  • Support for stronger bilateral trade following the conclusion of negotiations on the India–EU Free Trade Agreement in January 2026.
  • Agreement to establish a Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism and strengthen defence-industrial cooperation.

The leaders also reaffirmed support for multilateral cooperation, United Nations reform, clean energy transition initiatives and greater connectivity between India and Central Europe.
