UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has confirmed he will resign as Labour leader after mounting pressure from his parliamentary party, triggering a leadership contest set to begin in July and conclude before Parliament returns in September.

In his statement outside Downing Street on Monday (22 Jun), Starmer said: “The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election. I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace.” He confirmed: “That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party.”

He added that he had informed King Charles III, and will remain as Prime Minister during the transition, stating: “I will remain in post as prime minister until the contest is complete.” Starmer also pledged an orderly handover and said he would support his successor, noting they would inherit a stronger and more stable country.

The leadership process is expected to open nominations on 9 July, with the aim of concluding before the summer recess.

Starmer’s tenure began with a decisive 2024 election victory that ended 14 years of Conservative rule, but was increasingly defined by political volatility, declining approval ratings, and internal party divisions.

Attention now turns to Burnham, who has rapidly consolidated support across Labour’s parliamentary ranks following his decisive Makerfield by-election victory. Reporting indicates he is viewed by many MPs as the candidate best placed to stabilise the party and counter the rise of Reform UK, with some allies suggesting he could secure enough backing to avoid a prolonged leadership contest.
