The leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Poland and the United Kingdom met in Berlin on Wednesday (24 Jun) to coordinate priorities ahead of the 2026 NATO Summit in Ankara.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to Euro-Atlantic security, closer defence cooperation and continued transatlantic coordination, while outlining five areas for joint action.

Key developments:

  • Europe will take a greater role within NATO while strengthening defence investment and military capabilities.
  • Defence industrial cooperation will expand, focusing on air defence, AI,unmanned systems and long-range precision strike capabilities.
  • Leaders pledged continued military, economic and energy support for Ukraine, alongside backing efforts towards a just and lasting peace.
  • The group also welcomed the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding and reaffirmed that Iran must not acquire a nuclear weapon while supporting maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.
