Thousands of people gathered in San José, Costa Rica, on Thursday (6 Aug) to demonstrate in support of judicial independence, amid growing tensions between the government and the Judiciary.
The Plantón por la Justicia Democrática, supported by judicial unions, universities and social organisations, ended peacefully after more than four hours.
- Demonstrations were also held outside courthouses across several provinces.
- Attorney General Carlo Díaz and interim Judicial Investigation Police director Michael Soto addressed the crowd.
- The protests followed disputes over judicial appointments, constitutional reforms and Judiciary funding.
- The government has rejected claims that it intends to dismantle the Judiciary, saying reforms aim to reduce spending and improve efficiency.
The protests come amid wider institutional tensions involving President Laura Fernández’s government, the Legislative Assembly and the Constitutional Chamber.
