US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition (A3C), also known as the “Shield of the Americas”, during a meeting of partner nations in Panama, where officials discussed coordinated efforts against transnational drug cartels.

Representatives from 19 coalition members agreed to refine campaign plans, assign regional leadership roles and establish working groups ahead of approving a coalition strategy in November. General Francis L. Donovan, commander of US Southern Command, said member states would use their combined capabilities to target criminal networks.

Key developments:

  • A3C was launched in March 2026 to combat drug cartels, reduce illegal migration and strengthen regional security.
  • Coalition members agreed to develop a joint campaign plan by November.
  • Regional leadership roles and specialist working groups will support future operations.
