World-renowned economist and public policy expert Professor Jeffrey Sachs criticised US President Donald Trump during the MSSc in Global Political Economy dialogue series hosted by the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Sachs argued that Trump’s leadership reflected deeper structural problems within the US political system, which he described as “deeply corrupted”. He questioned the functioning of political institutions, checks and balances, and decision-making processes, while contending that Trump was both a cause and a symptom of wider political issues.
During the discussion, Sachs made a series of personal assessments of Trump’s psychological state, including describing him as “mentally ill” and a “malignant narcissist”. He also argued that recent US administrations had failed to improve national security, while calling for greater accountability in American politics.
