Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said the BRICS group must strengthen economic cooperation as countries face growing geopolitical uncertainty, supply chain disruptions and the increasing use of economic measures for political purposes.
Addressing the BRICS Business Forum in New Delhi on Friday (11 Sep), Pezeshkian said the bloc’s strength was not only based on the size of its members’ economies, but on turning those capabilities into “a network of trade, investment, and joint financing”.
He argued that economic resilience required greater diversification of trade partners, financing sources and payment channels, citing Iran’s experience with international sanctions. Pezeshkian said recent military tensions involving Iran had highlighted the connection between economic security and wider national and regional security.
Concluding his remarks, Pezeshkian called for BRICS to move from “fragmented cooperation” towards greater integration of trade infrastructure, arguing that the bloc’s influence would be reflected through “contracts, factories, ports and the economic lives of the people” of member countries.
