Leaders of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) met in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, on Friday (9 Oct), with discussions covering economic integration, regional security and cooperation across the former Soviet region.

Hosted by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, the summit brought together Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and other regional leaders for discussions in restricted and expanded formats.

Key developments included decisions on:

  • Marking the 35th anniversary of the CIS and adopting a statement on preserving historical memory.
  • Designating 2028 as the Year of Social Development and Quality of Life and 2029 as the Year of Transport Connectivity.
  • Strengthening cooperation against cybercrime and other offences involving information and communication technologies.
  • Promoting the CIS internationally and coordinating population censuses planned for 2030.

Putin said Russia’s trade with CIS partners exceeded US$110 billion in 2025, adding that transactions in national currencies accounted for more than 90% of mutual payments. Uzbekistan is due to assume the CIS chairmanship on 1 January 2027, succeeding Turkmenistan.
