Thousands of people joined Gen Z-led protests across Germany on Saturday (31 Oct), with demonstrations held in more than 30 cities over concerns including rising living costs, education funding and plans for military conscription.

Organised by the Gen Z Regelt alliance, rallies took place in cities including Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne and Munich. Organisers said nearly 180,000 people had registered across 34 cities, while the Berlin demonstration near the Brandenburg Gate remained largely peaceful.

Key developments:

  • Youth-led protests formed part of a wider wave of demonstrations across Europe focused on affordability and public services.
  • Protesters raised concerns over cost of living pressures, education cuts and military conscription.
  • Some clashes were reported between protesters and police in parts of Germany, including Cologne.

The demonstrations highlight growing political engagement among younger Europeans amid debates over government spending priorities, social investment and security policy.
