U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held their first call in three months, discussing TikTok, trade, illicit drugs, and Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Trump said, “He approved the TikTok deal… the TikTok deal is well on its way,” though Beijing made no reference to a formal agreement, only stating that “the Chinese government respects the wishes of the company in question.”
Talks will continue at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Gyeongju, South Korea, starting 31 October. Trump confirmed he would visit China in early 2026, with Xi expected to travel to the U.S. later.
Congress has ordered TikTok to shut down in the U.S. by January 2025 unless its U.S. assets are sold by ByteDance. Key questions remain over ownership, algorithm control, and Congressional approval.
