US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping opened high-level talks in Beijing on Thursday (14 May), with both leaders stressing the importance of stable US-China relations during the start of a two-day summit.

Xi said the world was entering a period of rapid geopolitical change and questioned whether China and the United States could avoid the “Thucydides Trap”, a term associated with conflict between rising and established powers.

He said cooperation between the two countries would contribute to global stability, adding that both nations “stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation”.

Trump described Xi as a “great leader” and said the relationship between China and the United States would become “better than ever before”.

He also highlighted the presence of senior American business executives in the US delegation, saying they were seeking expanded trade and investment opportunities in China.

The summit is expected to cover trade, tariffs, Taiwan and wider international security issues through Friday in Beijing.
