Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the war with Iran will not last years, describing the campaign as measured in weeks rather than becoming an “endless war”.
Speaking to Fox News, Netanyahu said the operation could be “quick and decisive”. Israeli military spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani said planning is based on a timeframe of weeks, adding that ground forces inside Iran are unlikely at this stage.
The conflict escalated after joint US-Israeli strikes killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iran has since launched missile and drone attacks against Israel and US forces, including strikes it says are aimed at American bases hosted by regional allies, disrupting energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and paralysing regional air travel.
On Tuesday (3 March), Saudi Arabia said two drones struck the US embassy compound in Riyadh, causing minor damage and a fire, while additional drones were intercepted before reaching the city. The US military said it has now hit more than 1,250 targets in Iran.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said “the hardest hits are yet to come”, adding that Washington believes its objectives — including degrading Iran’s ballistic missile capabilities — can be achieved without ground forces, though “the president is not going to rule out anything”.
