UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer addressed the nation on the ongoing Middle East conflict, emphasising that Britain will not become directly involved. He highlighted the importance of de-escalation and ensuring the safe passage of energy through the Strait of Hormuz, calling it “such a vital route for energy.”
Speaking at a press conference on 1 April, Starmer described discussions with business leaders in shipping, finance, insurance, and energy supply, noting safety and security as the main challenges. He outlined immediate support for households, including a £100 reduction in energy bills, an extension of the fuel duty cut until September, and £53 million to assist those affected by heating oil price rises.
Starmer emphasised investments in clean British energy and closer partnerships with European allies, noting that Brexit had “deep damage” to the economy. He added that strengthening cooperation with Europe is essential to cut the cost of living and improve national security in a volatile global environment.
The Prime Minister also highlighted UK leadership on the international stage, noting that 35 nations have now joined a UK-led initiative to ensure maritime security in the Gulf. A summit hosted by the Foreign Secretary later this week will bring these countries together to coordinate diplomatic, political, and military measures to restore safe navigation and protect vital shipping routes.
